10 Oct 2010 - e2E Satcom supports the SB-SAT Consortium

e2E Satcom has been selected by Com Dev Europe and Inmarsat to perform system and type approval testing of the innovative new BGAN terminal, christened SB-SAT (SwiftBroadband for Satellite). Partnered with Broad Reach Engineering in the US, this group of companies is planning to deliver a terminal that will provide 24/7 real-time, IP-based access (up to 475kbps) to and from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

 

COMDEV Europe Ltd has been awarded a contract from ESA for the engineering qualification model of the SB-SAT transceiver and the modification required to the Inmarsat BGAN Ground Segment elements.

 

LEO satellites are traditionally out of coverage for large parts of their orbits, due to limited visibility to their ground stations. The SB-SAT terminal would enable LEO spacecraft to access Telemetry, Tracking and Control (TT&C) and low rate data in real time during the whole orbit. This new SB-SAT terminal, which leverages the services and capabilities of the existing Inmarsat BGAN network, will revolutionise connectivity and the concept of operations for these platforms.

 

Given its long experience and insights into the operation of the BGAN system, and its close relationship with Inmarsat, e2E Satcom is ideally placed to help with the engineering and testing of this new terminal type, and is providing both programmatic and technical inputs alongside the test planning and execution of the launch product. e2E Satcom is also proud to work with Com Dev Europe and Broad Reach Engineering for the first time, and looks forward to supporting these leading manufacturers of space flight hardware through to successful product delivery.

 

A first flight opportunity for the under development SB-SAT technology has been already secured by the industrial consortium through a contract awarded to Inmarsat.
